Staunton Montessori School, founded in 1982, provides Primary (ages3-6) and Elementary (6-12) Montessori education as a unique alternative to the community. This approach to learning was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), an Italian physician and educator, who believed that education should be based on a child's needs and sensitive periods of development. The core tenets of her philosophy, independence and respect for individuality and others, combined with order and self-discipline are the foundations of the Montessori classroom. This setting, along with specialized educational materials create a unique and challenging atmosphere for learning. SMS is an Association Montessori Internationale certified facility and operates as a non-profit entity with oversight by a Board of Trustees. The school is also licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services.
