Onward Neighborhood House was founded in Chicago in 1893 and incorporated as anonprofit in 1943. Onward House is a beacon for many families, children andindividuals. Onward House’s mission is: To empower families andindividuals in need to achieve their full potential in a community-basedsetting through participant-driven educational, recreational and social serviceprograms.  Onward Neighborhood House is committed to providing servicesto those Chicagocommunity members who need it most. We provide a continuum of services atour West Town and Belmont Cragin locations, including an Early ChildhoodProgram that includes Head Start, a School Age Program, tutoring, senior services,a food pantry, family support services (including emergency services), andcommunity technology services.  Onward House operates full year and all of our programs typicallyoperate at full capacity. Last year, Onward House served approximately 950families and over 5,500 individuals (70% Latino; 15%Caucasian; and 15%African-American). Onward House serves residents of West Town, BelmontCragin, Austin and other areas throughout the near north and northwest side ofChicago. The average income of the families we serve is $18,000. In theschool district Onward House serves, 73% of the students are eligible for freelunch and 85% of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch throughthe government. The average family that we serve has an 8th grade educationallevel and speaks primarily Spanish at home.  Onward House is a caring neighbor, a local resource, and a vibrantcenter of opportunity.  It is one of the major providers of childcare and early childhood education in Chicago.  Itis also a friend when emergencies strike, linking residents to services andensuring no one is hungry.  More importantly, it is a gathering placewhere residents meet and exchange ideas. Children participating in Head-Start programslearn English and receive nutritious meals.  From quality earlyeducation programs, to computer courses for adults and seniors, Onward House isserving the community.
