One of the juvenile Imperial Eagles tagged with satellite transmitter, Sofia continued her wandering and reached Ukraine. On May 1st she left Bulgaria and headed north traveled a great distance just for one day. On May 2, Sofia had already crossed Romania and Moldova and entered Ukraine. There she remained until May 6th by circling near the towns of Hmelnitskiy and Vinnitsia, about 200 km southwest of the capital Kiev. Currently, the juvenile Imperial Eagle traveling south back to Bulgaria. Other bird with transmitter, named Topola, also went to the north and on May 6th she entered Romania. There she circled around Craiova and passed near the capital Bucharest. Currently, the bird is moving towards the Romanian town of Braila. You can see the path of the Imperial Eagles on the satellite module of the website: http://www.saveraptors.org/. Visit the rubric Satellite tracking. The two juvenile Imperial Eagles - Sofia Topola - are part of the 7 birds, which was tagged with satellite transmitters by BSPB last summer. The activity is within the LIFE + project for the conservation of the Imperial Eagle and Saker Falcon. Due to the modern technology for real-time satellite tracking, scientists know much more about the wanderings of young birds, about the places they prefer and about the threats they are faced with. This summer other 7 juvenile Imperial Eagles will be tagged transmitters.
