Manitukala, the orphan foal

Manitukala is now two months old. We brought him and his mother out of a feedlot, along with two other mares and foals. We brought the wild mare (his dam), to our ranch, and then were headed several hundred miles south to deliver the other two mares and foals.
The wild mare was extremely malnourished, just skin and bones, and had a bad case of pneumonia. She and her foal were herded into a clean, well-bedded stall, and my daughter watched over them. During the night, the mare died, leaving Manitukala a one month old orphan. We believe the mare knew she was in a good place, and that her foal would be well taken care of.
We have taken extraordinary measures to keep Manitukala alive. He has had catherization so we could hydrate him, and we slept in the stall with him for the first week. He was so bereft without his mother, he would stand in the corner and hang his head.
Manitukala is now eating mare and foal, along with hay, and we feel he is doing well. He will face surgery, since he has a large hernia, and he will also need castration. We are getting him as strong and healthy as we can, so that he has an excellent chance of survival!
