SEASON OPENER: PASSPORT TO EUROPE

Suppé - Light Cavalry Overture Weber - Clarinet Concerto no. 1 Mendelssohn - Symphony no. 4 in A Major (“Italian”) What better way to open the season than with rousing fanfare? While Franz von Suppé’s popular overture may conjure mental images of exotic Hungarian gypsies and noble Austrian mounted soldiers, the galloping you hear comes not from horses but from a rather unconventional ballet company featured in the comic opera from which the overture comes. For today’s world traveler, the airport is a necessary evil. The “Tale of Victor Navorski,” performed by clarinetist David Drosinos, will give you something beautiful to listen to while you await your next flight. Having arrived safely in Germany, Drosinos will continue to entertain you with the operatic lyricism of Weber’s first clarinet concerto which, despite being composed in the “classical” period, is undeniably romantic in nature. The final stop on our European tour is Italy. Felix Mendelssohn gives a thorough tour of the country encompassing its landscape, its people, and its art. In his own words, “This is Italy!”
